Creating Shareholder Value

Delivering a Decade of Transformation.

Ventas has been transformed over the past decade – beginning with our decision to elect REIT status in 2000 to becoming an S&P 500 constituent, the leading healthcare REIT and one of the nation’s largest REITs overall.

Led by Chairman and CEO Debra A. Cafaro, Ventas spent the early part of the decade restructuring its balance sheet, putting in place a new senior management team and preparing for a series of acquisitions of high-performing healthcare assets. We have completed eight major acquisitions in as many years: ElderTrust (2004); Provident Senior Living Trust (2005); Senior Care (2006); Sunrise Senior Living REIT (2007); Lillibridge Healthcare Services (2010); Atria Senior Living Group (2011); Nationwide Health Properties (2011) and Cogdell Spencer, Inc. (2012). The Sunrise purchase was a breakthrough for the entire healthcare REIT industry: our innovative financial and tax structure transformed the healthcare REIT landscape by demonstrating the ability of healthcare REITs to participate in the operating income growth attributes embedded in seniors housing. In fact, our novel structuring of the Sunrise acquisition was endorsed by NAREIT and preceded the Congressional approval of a change to the U.S. tax code.

Throughout, we have pursued a consistent strategy to deliver reliable growth for our shareholders through investment in a diversified portfolio of seniors housing and healthcare real estate assets.
